Education: B.Sc., 1960 (University of Barcelona); Ph.D., 1965 (Prof. José Pascual-Vila, University of Barcelona); Research Assistant (1966-68) with Prof. O.P. Strausz, University of Alberta, Edmonton (Canada). Appointments: Researcher at the Spanish CSIC, 1969-74. Associate Professor of the University Autonomous of Barcelona (UAB), 1974-76. Full Professor of the University of Granada (1976) and Full Professor at the UAB (1977-2009). Office charges at the UAB: Dean of the Faculty of Sciences (1983-87). Vice-rector of Research and of Academic Affairs (1978-82 and 1990-94 respectively). He was also appointed General Director of the Catalan universities (1995-97) and President of the Organic Chemistry Group of the Royal Spanish Chemical Society (1993-97) and Vice-president of the same society (1998-2005). MRSC of the Royal Society of Chemistry, UK. Main fields of research and artistic creation: Organic reaction mechanisms, stereoselective synthesis of natural products, synthetic photochemistry, solid phase synthesis, chemistry of beta-butenolides (syntheses and building blocks), polyfunctionalized cyclohexanes, etc. Publications: More than 220 peer-reviewed articles and supervisor of 32 Ph.D. theses. Awards and honors: Juan March Foundation grant (1963); Ciutat de Barcelona prize to his Ph.D. thesis (1966); Narcís Monturiol medal to the scientific merit (1998, Generalitat de Catalunya); Antonio Gonzalez medal (2003, Cabildo Insular of the Canary Islands), Plaque to the Scientific Contribution (2008, Royal Spanish Chemical Society).
