Biographical note:Full Professor of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology and Director of the Center of Animal Biotechnology and Gene Therapy at the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona. She received her PhD in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology and her undergraduate degree in Pharmacy from the University of Barcelona. She conducted postdoctoral studies at Vanderbilt University, Case Western Reserve University, and the NCI-Frederick Cancer Research Center, USA. She has received national and international recognition through several awards: Rey Juan Carlos I (1995), Narcís Monturiol Medal (2002) and Sant Jordi Cross (2005) Generalitat de Catalunya, Alberto Sols from SED (2006), ICREA Academia (2012, 2018, 2024), Jacob’s Ladder Norman Saunders International Research Prize, Canada (2019), UAB Social Council “Transfer prize” (2020), “Silver Fig Leaf” from Town Hall of Figures, Spain (2023) and the Honor Medal 2025 of the “Xarxa Vives d’Universitats”. She was a founding member of European Society of Gene and Cell Therapy, President of Spanish Society of Gene and Cell Therapy and Vice-President of European Association for Study of Diabetes. She is also a member of the Gene Doping Expert Group of the World Anti-Doping Agency (since 2013). Academy member of Royal Academy of Sciences and Arts of Barcelona (2022). Her research has focused for more than 30 years on developing AAV-mediated gene therapy approaches for both, rare and highly prevalent diseases, including metabolic and neurodegenerative disorders among others. She has authored >190 scientific publications and >30 patents, most already transferred to biotech and pharma industry.
